Secretary of State - William Seward

A portrait of William Seward, United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln. I was watching a show on Lincoln and they spoke of Seward. I thought he had unique and interesting features so I decided to do a piece on him. I wanted to give it the old portrait photograph look from his era.

This was sculpted from a generic head base mesh in Mudbox. I textured with Photoshop and rendered with Mental Ray in Maya. Post processing done wtih Photoshop.

a color version can be found at my site

The Unknown Project: Demona

I'm helping my good friend Alp Altiner ( www.alpaltiner.com ) with his personal project called The Unknown ( www.unknownproject.net ). The book will be out in September with lots of great concept paintings. This creature will be featured in his book in the 'making of' section. He gave me a rough concept for a creature and I modeled it out for him. Through his art direction and some back and forth we went from the rough original concept to this final sculpted and textured character. The base mesh was created and posed in maya and sculpted in mudbox. Textures were done in Photoshop with final rendering in mental ray.

I wanted to do a human anatomy study, but something more figurative than the regular old T-pose human. I used an old low res human model of mine, quickly posed it in Maya and then brought it to Mudbox for sculpting. I wanted to try to keep my strokes loose to catpure the feeling of a clay or stone sculpture. I also tried to keep it loose so that I could concentrate more on the gesture of the pose as opposed to smaller superficial details. The render was done with Mental ray and again, I tried to capture the look and feel of a stone sculpture
